Watching a Chaplin silent movie one night brought back thoughts of my father. When he was 16 he made a living playing piano in the nickelodeons of Philadelphia. He later studied theatre organ. He told me some of the big movies had their own musical scores but most often you had to create your own. You played with your eyes on the screen, creating a theme for each change of scene and mood, drawing from memory and often improvising. This piece is a tribute to my dad and to the era when the movie’s only voice was the keyboard. - Bob McGuire
