Three Rags for 2 cellos – three fun ragtimes by Bob McGuire. For intermediate to advanced players. (Score & parts)

1895 Rag - In 1895, an award winning movie, “The Sting”, featured a score of ragtime piano music by Scott Joplin. I was captivated by the man’s music played as it was meant to be. I’ve always enjoyed history in many forms, including the music of different eras. Reading of Joplin’s life, I learned his music became popular in Europe before it was accepted in America. His first published music was in 1895. My title plays homage to the king of ragtime, Scott Joplin.

One for Charlie Chaplin - Watching a Chaplin silent movie one night brought back thoughts of my father. When he was 16 he made a living playing piano in the nickelodeons of Philadelphia. He later studied theatre organ. He told me some of the big movies had their own musical scores but most often you had to create your own. You played with your eyes on the screen, creating a theme for each change of scene and mood, drawing from memory and often improvising. This piece is a tribute to my dad and to the era when the movie’s only voice was the keyboard.
Also available for cello quartet

The Aurora Rag - In 1980 I was hired as a banjo-entertainer at Sea World of Ohio in Aurora, OH. There were killer whales, dolphins, sea lions and many other species of animals in the show. It was fun for my tuba playing partner and I to go out 20 minutes before the Shamu show and face a full house of 5,000 people. Our job was to get them to sing, clap and smile six shows a day. I must admit we must have done something right. They kept us there for 20 years. On wet, cold days we wouldn’t do as many shows. With more down-time on those days I tried composing a tune for the banjo. It turned out to be a ragtime sing so I named it in honor of its birthplace. - Bob McGuire
